In the current culture of “fake news” claims and Twitter statuses being taken for news, it’s important to at least try to get a handle on where you can go to find fairly straightforward and unbiased reporting on issues that matter.
These six news outlets are, in my humble and — I’d like to believe — fairly moderate opinion, a few of the best political news websites that do a great job finding the facts and reporting on them fairly.
The Wall Street Journal is one news source that has been frequently maligned by the current administration as a source of fake news, but its writers do their best to provide accurate and fact-checked news to their readers. Early in the year, many writers and staffers left the paper because they were under pressure to provide biased reporting in support of the current administration, whether they believed in it or not.
It is important to note that the unbiased journalism for the Wall Street Journal only extends to their news reporting. Their columns and op-eds are very biased. They’re a great resource if you’re looking for differing opinions on a topic though, which also holds a lot of value to the independent-minded voter.
Reuters is a London-based news source, and in spite of their location across the pond, they offer some of the best and most unbiased news on the things that are happening in the United States and the world. Their goal, which has been stated and restated in the recent months, is to provide its audience with the information that they need to make better decisions in their life.
This information is provided simply as a resource for those who are looking to learn more about what is going on in the world and how it can affect them. I can’t emphasize enough the importance of international news, so this one’s high on my list.
NPR, short for National Public Radio, has earned its name as a news source in the past by offering a platform for debates and opinions on a variety of topics.
In spite of their dedication to providing accurate and unbiased news, NPR constantly receives complaints that their reporting is liberally biased — many of these are unfounded, but it should be taken under consideration when reading NPR news reports.
The New York Times is one of the oldest and most trusted sources for information in the country — which may be why they have been repeatedly attacked this year by the current administration.
In spite of this, the NY Times is still one of the best and most accurate sources for unbiased news reporting. They, too, have plenty of editorial and opinion pieces that will be very biased, but their core reporting is probably some of the best in the industry.
AP, or The Associated Press, is one of the oldest and most renowned news organizations. It was founded in 1846 and has succeeded for more than 170 years.
In response to all the claims of fake news in the last few months, AP’s social media editor sent out a memo to its writers, reinforcing the fact that their primary goal is to provide accurate information for their readers. In his words, “Let’s say what we know to be true and what is false based on our reporting.
So, in headlines and copy, be clear about what we have learned and how we have learned it.”
BBC, or the British Broadcasting Corporation, is probably one of the best sources for unbiased news, simply because of UK government oversight. The BBC is a government-funded institution. It is not allowed to show bias in reporting and is required to focus on unbiased impartiality on all reported subjects.
Their agreement literally forbids them from expressing an opinion on any current events or public policy. It’s not perfect, but it is much easier to be unbiased when it’s against the rules of your contract.
A Little Disclaimer
Over time, it is likely that almost any news outlet will develop some… slight bias.
(See what I did there?)
