Who founded Friends of the Earth?

Brower, David Mander, Jerry Founders of Friends of the Earth International.

Founded in 1970 by American businessman and environmentalist William E. Simon, who wanted to create a grassroots organization to protect the environment. He had been influenced by the work of Japanese scientist Masanori Ogawa who had co-founded the first international conservation group, the Japan Conservation Foundation, in 1966. The JCFI was looking for a counterpart organization in the United States, and so Bill Simon decided to start his own foundation instead. He reached out to several friends who shared his concerns about pollution and other issues related to development, and they agreed to help fund the project. One of these men was Jerry Mander, who had just quit his job at the Ford Foundation to focus on environmental issues full time. He joined Simon's team and served as its president from 1972 to 1976.

Their goal was to promote environmental protection by raising public awareness about environmental issues through research, education, and advocacy. They also wanted to give ordinary people a voice in addressing these problems by forming "citizens' groups" across the country.

Where are Friends of the Earth based?

Amsterdam, Netherlands For tax reasons, the international wing of Friends of the Earth is headquartered in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The Dutch branch was founded in 1990 by a group of activists who wanted to continue the work of their predecessor organization, Milieudefensie.

They have offices in several other countries including Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, South Africa and United States.

Friends of the Earth International has over 500,000 members worldwide. These members can be either individuals or organizations that want to support the efforts of Friends of the Earth International.

Individual donations account for more than 90% of the funds received by FOE International. The remaining 10% comes from governmental sources, mainly European Union funding.

Friends of the Earth International has four main departments: EU Affairs, Finance, Global Campaigns and Science & Technology. Each department is led by a director who is responsible for organizing annual meetings with other leaders from around the world. They also work on certain projects that they believe will help protect the environment while promoting social justice.

How does Friends of the Earth help the environment?

Environmentalists We in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland are part of an international community devoted to the preservation of the natural environment and the well-being of all people who live in it. We lead campaigns, give tools and information, and push for meaningful solutions to the environmental issues that we all face. Our work is based on three ideas: that there is a real connection between what we do and how animals are treated; that caring for the planet should be as important as feeding ourselves and our families; and that political action is needed to create change.

We work on several fronts to bring about positive transformation in our lifestyle and society. One is by campaigning against activities we believe have negative impacts on the environment. This includes lobbying government officials to adopt more sustainable policies, helping them understand the need for reform, and providing evidence to support their decisions. We also work with business to get them to adopt more environmentally friendly practices. For example, companies that manufacture products that contain toxic substances must inform consumers about these chemicals and how they can be avoided or replaced. They also must provide easy access to any relevant information about their products.

We also work to protect the environment by creating green economies. This means promoting clean energy technologies and efficient use of resources by businesses and individuals. It can also mean protecting endangered species by advocating for their conservation within national parks and other protected areas. Finally, we work to ensure that the benefits of economic growth are shared by everyone through effective governance of corporate activity and increased social justice.
