What does it mean to have a diverse and inclusive community?

Inclusive communities welcome individuals from all walks of life, including, but not limited to, elders, teens, children, Aboriginal peoples, immigrants and newcomers, people with disabilities, persons dealing with mental health issues, and low-income residents. These communities also encourage participation by building infrastructure for open dialogue, such as user groups and community councils.

Diverse communities are equal in their treatment of others, without discrimination based on race, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or nationality. Such communities are willing to embrace differences among its members as a source of strength rather than a barrier to integration. They work to break down stereotypes and prejudices about each other's lifestyles and behaviors.

A diverse and inclusive community is one that values human dignity and the worth of every person. It strives to be accepting of different cultures and beliefs while at the same time encouraging openness to new ideas and ways of thinking.

Diversity has many definitions. Here are three:

1 Diversity refers to the variety of things that differ in type or nature. In terms of our community, diversity means we have people of different races, religions, ages, abilities, and nationalities who come together to share ideas and solve problems.

2 Diversity can also be defined as the presence of many different kinds of people within a group or society.

What are the characteristics of an inclusive community?

A welcoming community:

  • Does everything that it can to respect all its citizens, gives them full access to resources, and promotes equal treatment and opportunity.
  • Works to eliminate all forms of discrimination.
  • Engages all its citizens in decision-making processes that affect their lives.
  • Values diversity.

What is an inclusive working environment?

Share. An inclusive workplace is one in which people of all backgrounds and abilities are welcomed and respected for their contributions. It is a place where persons with impairments, both visible and invisible, have equal opportunity for progress as their coworkers. It is a community that values the individuality of its members.

Inclusive workplaces provide an environment that is free from discrimination based on gender, race, religion, age, disability, or any other factor. Employees also have the right to know about these policies and be included in decisions that affect them. Companies that want to be successful in today's market place must create such an environment if they are to attract and retain top talent.

Such an environment can only exist when there is open communication between employees at all levels of the company. This means that managers should not hide problems but rather discuss them openly with their staff so that solutions can be found. Managers should also take time to listen to their employees' concerns and address those issues immediately. This shows that the company cares about its workers and will do everything possible to ensure their satisfaction.

In addition, employees should be treated with respect and honesty. They should know exactly how they are being measured against others and what incentives, if any, there are for them to perform better.

What do you mean by an inclusive society?

An inclusive society is one in which inequalities in race, gender, class, generation, and location are ignored in order to assure inclusion, equality of opportunity, and the ability of all members of the society to establish an accepted set of social institutions that regulate social interaction. (From McKay.)

Inclusion means being part of a group or organization. If you go to school, work, or play on a sports team, you will be included in that group or organization. Inclusion also means being accepted as part of something; not being excluded. If you go to school, work, or play on a sports team, you will not be excluded from that group or organization.

Equality means being given what is due you. If you go to school, work, or play on a sports team, you will be given equal opportunities to succeed. Equality also means being treated the same as others; having no differences in treatment.

Opportunity means the chance to get something done or to try your luck at something. If you go to school, work, or play on a sports team, you will have opportunities to succeed. The opportunity word can also mean being allowed to take part in something; being granted permission to do something.

Inclusiveness is when everyone is given a chance to do everything.
